Yerba Mate

Mate is similar to tea and is made from the dried leaves and stems of the Yerba Mate Tree. It can either be served Hot or Cold and is a sign of Friendship throughout Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay ("Yerba Mate"). The word “Mate” gets its name from the cup that is used to drink it out of. The Mate is traditionally made out a gourd and is drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla. ("Yerba Mate").

Mate is also a sign of friendship. Throughout parts of South America, Drinking Yerba Mate is a social event between friends. The majority of the population carries their mate around with them and when opportunity arises, they share a drink with a friend or good acquaintance. This could take place on the streets, at the office, at home, in the airport ect.
